In my classroom

Bienvenidos a la clase de español conmigo
Welcome to Spanish class with me, Profe G

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to instruct Spanish at Churchill High School.  My love for Spanish began instantaneously. I liked the challenges it provided me to step outside of my comfort zone in order to communicate with others. I feel it is easy being “yourself” in your native language & culture but to transfer that to a new culture is a true test of self. Certainly, you can be cordial and friendly when you head out and around your home area but the test arises when you have to figure out how to do those things in a foreign environment & a new language. Therefore, I have studied and lived abroad in both Spain and Mexico.

I graduated from Michigan State University (1996) with a B.A. in Spanish and entered the mortgage industry to assist Hispanics in Detroit realize one part of the “American Dream” of purchasing their own home. During that time I recognized how much I enjoyed teaching and decided to return to school to become a professional educator.  Since then I have received my Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages with a concentration in Spanish from the University of Southern Mississippi. (2003)

Acquiring language is a difficult task. It does require time, patience, and persistence. Think about how long it has taken you to learn your native language – if you truly consider it, you are still learning it; acquiring new vocabulary, and creating new sentences all of the time! Please keep this in mind while you continue through the course.

I compare language learning to a roller coaster ride. At times, it seems you really understand and it may even come easily and then you reach the summit and take a nose dive down; you may feel like you don’t even remember how to conjugate a present tense verb. I understand that ride and will help guide you through the experience; excitement, frustration, understanding, lost, and succeeding. In this day and age, knowing a language other than one’s native tongue makes good sense academically, professionally and personally. I am ecstatic you chose to accept this journey!

Personally, I make Spanish a daily part of my life. Aside from teaching I read the news in Spanish, have Spanish-speaking friends, am part of a Spanish book club, travel whenever I possibly can to places I can speak Spanish, communicate with my husband and children in Spanish.

Please keep the lines of communication open with me. I am looking forward to helping you decode and understand the Spanish language and cultures that it incorporates.
